"The Cloud" means a whole lot of different things to different people
Companies like Google want you to use their sites so they can sell advertising. So their idea of "the Cloud" is to provide you a site where you have access to free (or nearly free) apps such as e-mail, word processor, spreadsheet, and others that you can use through your web browser. No need for a powerful computer, all you need is a browser, and the servers in The Cloud" do the heavy lifting.
Microsoft counters this idea with the idea that you rent software on their "cloud" rather than paying big bucks by buying it outright. Their still working on this, but that the general idea
Companies like Amazon and IBM have a different idea, for a different customer base. Many companies have periods of time when they need a great deal of computing power, say when analyzing a new oil field, or animating a new feature film. But buying all that computing power for one job, and then letting it sit idle, is a lot of wasted money.
IBM and Amazon rent computing power. Their "cloud" is an empty space of processors and memory that they divvy up and rent to customers. The customers upload virtual machines, load their applications and data, do the number crunching, download the results, and pay a bill.
The "landlords" then rent the power to the next applicant. All this is done over the net, on the "cloud"
So no wonder cloud computing is so confusing. It's really many ideas, all pointed at the same object - How to make a buckWhat is the cloud computing?
Google is going to give it to you. Like chrome. The applications and so on will be on the server. You computer will be like a browser and everything will be in the clouds.
