What the heck is "cloud computing" in layman's terms? and why is it "the future"?
its basically using a program that is installed on a computer somewhere else. they make it like it is a big deal because theoretically you wouldn't need a computer anymore, you would just need a screen and internet service.What the heck is "cloud computing" in layman's terms? and why is it "the future"?
In pure layman's terms, I reckon it's the biggest con out there. Let's take an example:-
Let's say you want to work on a work-based spreadsheet. First you have to pay to get the internet access. THEN you have to pay to subscribe to and access the app. THEN you have to pay to retrieve your document from the online storage. After you've finished working on it, you'll then have to pay to either print it or save it out to your online storage. Are you beginning to see a pattern here???
The computing industry has started to realise that the buying public out there ain't so gullible as it once was, and they are beginning to see what were constant streams of revenue drying up before their very eyes. They are therefore desperate to invent some way whereby the aforementioned public will have to keep paying.
Why do you reckon so many folks are now starting to build up archives of utilities and apps offline? That way, they can continue to work even after the industry goes completely "onto the cloud" (which isn't as far away as you might think).
Personally, after 30-some years in the industry, I reckon this could be the potential death knell of some parts of the industry. As I say, punters aren't as gullible and trusting as they once were. Once they realise this is a con, they're gonna desert it in droves--but if the industry has moved away from "conventional", computer-based computing, then what alternative are they going to have?
They can stuff this where the sun don't shine, as far as I'm concerned. I want NO part in it whatsoever (%26lt;end rant!!!)

I heard it will kill Windows and Mac OS X, it will force us to use internet and pay per application, which it is stupid! I don't want to use cloud computing in future. I think it's the future of computing. Having all of your resources to you at all times is a huge advantage.
I view cloud computing as another channel. Apple will announce cloud music, wherever you be, you can fetch dat tune and wozza the crowd on your iApple iHardware. The limitation will be the video which is what people will want. Video because of its high bandwidth will have unpredictable fetching. The idea though, is you will be able to dial home and connect to your TV. How your TV is connected will give either buffering -- play -- pause/buffering -- play -- pause/buffering etc., or banding or even live streaming with good results.
This idea that users will rent software on a per usage basis from the cloud just doesn't look feasible. I will never own a Microsoft portable device primarily because MS goes out of their way to engineer incompatibility.
Good tech jobs? Maybe not, but like the App Stores for iPhone and Android, cloud computing should let the little guy make a one-hit wonder. Again, I just don't see MS following that marketing model and they will be arriving late into the game with nothing new or better. MS is what it is because of OEM Windows and twisting the arms of the hardware manufacturers. MS comes in with a dead-duck phone company (Nokia) and the hardware needs a totally new design, so watch out for bugs.What's so bad about cloud computing?

Someday we will not have computers. just terminals. a keyboard, mouse, speakers and monitor. All processing and data handling will be done on a superserver and sent to our terminals from fiber optic cables at near light speed. If you want to upgrade your processor, all you have to do is extend your cloud account.
You will be able to access your computer and its apps from anywhere in the world. I think its a great new technology and Mac will be at the center of it all. Windows will slowly die out due to it being "handicapped" unable to talk to other computers and share each others apps.

With cloud apps I could type an estimate from any computer with an internet connection. Yet if there is a storm that knocks out the internet for a day or so I'm out of luck. Im pretty sure that the "dumb" version of what it is is that basically you can wirelessly acess data you have stored on one of your/ a companies' devices without having to email or plug anything in..... For example, if you buy a song on your computer through iTunes, instead of having to plug in your ipod to get the song, you can choose to have it automatically downloaded to your ipod without having to plug it in.......... thats all i know about it.What is cloud computing?

Basically any web application/site that store "data" for you without you being aware of where/how exactly it's being stores is "cloud computing". The data goes inside a cloud %26amp; when reqd. comes out of that cloud. As a user you can't see (or don't care to) the inside working of the cloud e.g
1) Email servers like Yahoo %26amp; GMail store your mails which may also have file attachments too. Some enterprises rent such Email services for internal use from other vendors to keep their capital cost low. (Email servers %26amp; software are a bit costly to buy %26amp; maintain)
2) You can store files to servers on the web so that you can access them any where. How it is stored/retrieved is not important. e.g. DropBox
3) You want a database to store information but don't want the hassle to install one on your machine, you get that as well e.g. Microsoft Azure
3) You get CPU time too in cloud computing. So, if you were working for some complex problem %26amp; you temporarily require a server performing the computation for it, without requiring buy such high end servers, you get that too as part of cloud computing. e.g. Google Apps, Azure

my office network uses a combination of servers, desktops, and laptops. it works really well and even allows people to work from home as long as they can connect to the internet.
It really depends on the size of the files you want to transfer and the speed of your connection.
for transferring small stuff like spreadsheet,presentations and pictures it's nearly instantaneous but for large things compressed files, long videos or lots of music it can take time for it to be accessible.

All cloud computing really is is the hosting of software and services in a data center, instead of on a local machine. An example of Cloud based services would be Gmail, Hot mail, Yahoo mail, Google's office tools and other applications that sit on someone else's server, which you can then access from any desktop anywhere in the world.
Google's Chrome OS, which is the big brother to their Android operating system, is Google's attempt to get people to move from their powerful desktop machines, to light weight, super fast machines that are up and running about 10 seconds after you turn them on. Well, to put it simply, its the idea of not having stuff on your hard drive. It makes it where your files are stored on servers somewhere out there in the net (or "cloud") and your programs are also stored on the internet, all that is on your computer is a portal to access the programs and files. you install a small bit of info as a program, but when you open it everything (including the actual program files its self) are being run from a server on the cloud. Its kind of like using outlook connected to an exchange server, you have outlook or a "portal" to access all your info. its a small piece of software on your computer but everything (emails, files, calender, tasks) are all on the server (now, yes there is a file on your computer but thats for cache mode). Thats a very basic way to explain it, but it puts it into prespective. To be honest, as an IT person, i dont like it. No internet, no files or software unless its backed up on your computer...then it kind makes it not worth while; but then again im a person that hates people using LIVE for email instead of exchange server.
Cloud computing providers deliver applications via the internet, which are accessed from web browsers and desktop and mobile apps, while the business software and data are stored on servers at a remote location. Before, if we wanted e-mail programs and games and word processors, we would buy them and install them on our computers, basically we are using our hard-drive to store the program to create files.
Today however hard-drives (storage) is a lot cheaper to buy. So major corperations like yahoo, microsoft, google, facebook and pogo are buying major hard-drives and using them in their servers. They can allow (you or I) to use programs loaded on their hard-drive to accomplish the same thing.
Imagine never buying a "game" or "outlook" for e-mails or a "word processor" program to install on your computer (that uses up your resources)
Cloud computer puts everything on the company servers...for example, Yahoo Mail, Gmail, Hotmail, is cloud e-mail programs.......Pogo, Facebook Games is cloud games. OpenOffice is just like Microsoft Office, but it's available free and it runs from the OpenOffice website.
When everything is converted to cloud computing, you buy a computer and everything you will ever need is already online, gone are the days you buy a program to run on your computer.

What is up with this new fad? people talk as if it is the best thing since sliced bread. Deep down, I do not like to put my personal files on a 3rd party server, who can monitor and disclose my information to anyone.

I've recently gotten to grips with C# and C++, hoping to hone my skills further. But I was wondering if anyone knew what cloud computing is all about. If its all computer services done over the internet on a server, will that kill regular programmers who make client side applications?

It depends what you mean by 'traditional programming'. Will programming still be important? Absolutely. Will languages like C and C++ still be used a lot? Probably. You'll just have to learn new styles of programming, especially multithreading and so on, in order to take advantage of the new hardware systems.
That said, I wouldn't be so sure that 'cloud computing is the future'. I think a lot of people are still going to find that owning their own hardware has its advantages. It reduces latency, and it gives you more control. Cloud computing will be used for some tasks, but all of them? I doubt it.
Cloud computing is basically a generic way of distributing tasks across multiple machines. Whereas one machine typically hosts a process or application, a cloud is just multiple machines dividing up the work. The process can be abstracted so that developers don't focus on distributing the tasks but rather just do what they normally would, so it actually encourages traditional programming but provides greater capabilities.
Cloud computing is only relevant when resources are lacking. Things like Facebook which are very data intensive need clouds, simple tasks don't.If cloud computing is the future, will it kill traditional programming?

If all goes as planned then all the apps and storage will be somewhere on a centralized or distributed group of servers (wait, didn't we do this already in the 80's with mainframes?). But computers will still be computers and they'll still have operating systems and they will still need to be connected to a network. Perhaps there will be less software conflicts because less apps need to be installed on the computers. WAN links may need to be beefed up to handle the bigger need (to get to the cloud). But overall the IT job should stay about the same.

Well I would say yes you could use this for backing up but surely theres other options out there... This is outside of my expertise however to give you an idea of time well... how long is a piece of string...

With such a vague question its hard to give you a definite answer however my advice would be to keep up with some research... theres tonnes of data there... Small scale test it and work out an upscale model... Asses what your usage is and if backing up over such an infrastructure will affect other required aspects, etc, etc, etc

Depends entirely on the parameters set and the reputation of the hosting company. Since larger companies are moving that way I'd suspect the security and back up issues are solved.

Upon hearing about Google's Chrome OS test run, I got to wondering about the advantages and disadvantages of having an operating system based entirely around a web browser. Obviously, if you don't have any internet connection, your computer is rendered useless (some would argue that without internet computers are useless anyway). But, aside from that, I really can't figure out the downside to this. So im very interested in the whole concept of cloud computing, not that I agree with it.. seeing as I think the practice of it now seems great and wonderful, but when it actually comes into affect i think we'll be running into alot of problems. There is always the concern of who owns the information....but otherwise I think the collaboration and sharing aspects that cloud computing bring to the table are really a positive thing.
