Well I would say yes you could use this for backing up but surely theres other options out there... This is outside of my expertise however to give you an idea of time well... how long is a piece of string...
What type of internet connection, where is the server what is the latency... upload/download bandwidth etc etc etc...
With such a vague question its hard to give you a definite answer however my advice would be to keep up with some research... theres tonnes of data there... Small scale test it and work out an upscale model... Asses what your usage is and if backing up over such an infrastructure will affect other required aspects, etc, etc, etc
Also a clarification on your idea of cloud computing would be good as there is some misinterpretations of the term.
