What is cloud computing in simple terms- how does it differ from whatever it's replacing?

What's the difference between cloud computing and whatever it's replacing (what's that called and am I likely using it now?). Do lots of people use it and can it be used for anything on the internet?What is cloud computing in simple terms- how does it differ from whatever it's replacing?
Cloud computing just means storing stuff in the cloud (the term cloud refers to servers on the internet).



For instance, there are currently online companies that offer back-up services for you. This means that you can simply download their program, and they'll automatically backup all your files periodically. So if your computer dies or gets infected with a virus or something, you can get back your old files online from the back-up company. (Of course, you have to pay a fee for this service; it's not free.)



This is in contrast to the "traditional" way of backing stuff up. Most people just buy external hard drives and do the backup themselves. Cloud computing means that we allow a company to do it for us via the internet.





More examples:

- Google docs is a cloud-computing version of office suites (such as Microsoft office). Whereas with Microsoft Office or OpenOffice, you buy/download the product and install it on your own computer, Google docs doesn't actually require you to install anything on YOUR side. It just requires your web browser, and all the heavy lifting/work is done by Google's server (for instance, Google is the one doing the spell-checking, saving your documents, etc -- your computer doesn't really do much).What is cloud computing in simple terms- how does it differ from whatever it's replacing?
Cloud computing isn鈥檛 just for online storage 鈥?you can use business software such as e-mail, CRM or ERP online rather than having to install the software on your computer.



In some cases, you don't even know that you're using a Cloud option compared to one that's it's replacing (on your PC/servers, etc.). The difference is that you access the solution/software online and can usually access from any PC or mobile device.
